Musical Hearts

The first part of this Spotify playlist features, in order, the songs in the post. The rest have the word heart, or love, in the song title.

Here it is! Ka-doof ka-doof…music to match our hearts (if you haven’t read the sister post, you can do so in a heartbeat; it’s short). Thank you for your great suggestions! Now you can listen to the mixed tape. Remember those? We’d spend hours, hours, recording a mixed bag of music onto a cassette tape? Now we use Spotify, and everything is on a device

You don’t want to listen on Spotify? No problem – the song titles will take you to YouTube videos.

ALUMINIUM

Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) by Looking Glass – Brandy epitomizes the stalwart love and untarnished devotion an aluminium heart demonstrates against all odds. It will not be foiled, it will not rust.

People Help The People by Birdy – Aluminium hearts are good hearts, altruistic hearts. They see the storm in every eye, the survivor in each heart, the salt in all tears, yet they never stop building.

Window of Hope by Oleta Adams – If they’re framed in aluminium, you can trust they’ll be there. Their love doesn’t corrode.

PLASTIC

Young and Beautiful by Lana Del Rey – When you ask a plastic heart if they will still love you when you’re no longer young and beautiful, it’s a rhetorical question. You know they will. Their love does not perish. It’s wrapped in cling film and sealed in a Ziploc bag.

Living Doll by Cliff Richard – Got a roving eye? A plastic heart is your solution: she’ll satisfy your soul. Her hair? It’s real! Lock her up in a trunk before some big hunk steals her away. That’s what Cliff says. Sounds creepy to me.

WOOD

Light My Fire by José Feliciano – The wooden heart wants lots of lovin’ and will do what it must to fan the flames. Ignite their passion if you don’t want your love to become a funeral pyre.

Puppet On A String by Sandie Shaw – When it’s a Sandie puppet, her wooden heart will gladly be there if you say you love her madly. Show you care and you’ll be pulling her strings.

PAPER

Ace of Hearts by Chris Rea – When you’re playing the game of love only the Ace of Hearts can save you. Play your cards right. Show your hand. And no cheating.

Paper Roses by Marie Osmond – The paper heart is torn to shreds when you give it something fake and artificial – an imitation love.

Paper Moon by Ella Fitzgerald – If you believe in them your love won’t be make-believe. Enough said.

If You Could Read My Mind by Gordon Lightfoot – What a tale the paper heart tells! It’s a paperback novel with a hard ending.

Streets of London by Ralph McTell – Paper hearts can hold onto the past forever. Yesterday’s news in yesterday’s papers will pile up in the corner, turning yellow. It’s heartbreaking.

COTTON

Down Home Girl by Rainbow Girls – Yeah baby, you’ve got style, and you’re going places one big gorgeous stride at a time.

Dirty Little Secret by The All-American Rejects – Cotton hearts keep their dirty little secrets tucked safely away in the walk-in closet. But what about your muddy secrets? Cotton hearts want to do your dirty laundry and hang it out to dry.

I’m Too Sexy by Right Said Fred – The cotton heart is too sexy by far. Too sexy for their shirt, too sexy for their car, too sexy for their hat. Too sexy for this post. They knock your cotton socks off.

STONE

Heart Of Stone by The Rolling Stones – You can never break hearts of stone. It wasn’t always so. Stone hearts will confide ‘I was hurt so bad I had to harden my heart.’

Harden My Heart by Quarterflash – Not only did they harden their heart, they swallowed their tears and left. They’re not as stony as they look, but you’d be forgiven for not wanting to hit your head against their wall. It hurts.

GLASS

Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus – Say you hate their hairstyle behind their back, tell your dog to bite their leg, but don’t tell a glass heart it is straight up over. They just don’t (or won’t want to ) understand.

Glass by The Sandpipers – Glass hearts gloss over their partner’s cutting flaws, feel shattered and broken, find solace in green illusions and escapism. They need TLC and a soft touch, even when you feel they’re blowing things a bit out of proportion.

Glass by Thompson Square – An anthem for the glass heart.

RUBBER

Elastic Heart by Sia – The rubber heart has a thick skin. It’s elastic. It hasn’t conquered love but it keeps trying, stretching boundaries and flying in the face of convention. You could say it’s…

Promiscuous by Nelly Furtado ft. Timbaland – Promiscuous? Possibly because…

Love Is The Drug by Roxy Music – Mmmmm, love is the drug. Turn the key in the ignition and stake your place in the singles bar.

Click. That’s the end of our Musical Hearts Mixed Tape.

I enjoy the visuals in many of these videos. I smile. How time flies. And we agree, globally, when it comes to 80’s fashion: it’s a good thing it’s gone.

Thank you for tapping your toes and swinging your hips.

  1. Oh boy……now I feel REALLY old!👵👵 I absolutely love Down Home Girl by the Rainbow Girls…….so cool and laid back! The truck in the background starting up packs me up 🤩 It was good to hear Gordon Lightfoot again, amongst others. Don’t know if anybody remembers that Sandie Shaw always sang barefoot! xxxxx

    1. The Rainbow Girls do light things up and the motor start-up is a merry moment…glad you appreciated that 😃 I don’t remember Sandie Shaw’s bare feet but I have heard of her shoeless performances! Did she have particularly big feet? 🤔😆 Thank you, as always, for your enthusiasm. 💃❤️
